Know the Lingo—How to sound like a Local:
Goodnight. It’s not used when going to bed or calling it an evening, but instead it’s a greeting spoken to others when it gets dark. Instead of saying “hello” or “how are you?” when on the street strolling, Belizeans greet each other with “goodnight.”
Haul Your Ass-If you want a drink for the stroll, ask for a “Haul Your Ass”, which is a plastic to go cup for your drink. Or, you can say “Rass” if you want the more polite version. (Rass is common substitute.)If it’s a beer, rather than taking the bottle, which has a deposit, the restaurants many time prefer to put it in a cup for you (so they can keep the bottle deposit.)
Fever Grass-Refers to lemon grass, a fragrant herb. Lemon grass tea and Coastal Fever are refreshing drinks made with lemon grass. When folks get a fever, they believe the lemon grass helps, hence the term fever grass.
Dash it-Refers to throwing something away or putting it in the garbage.
Sunrise-Refers to your date of birth.
Sunset-Refers to your time of death. On the graves, it is common to see sunrise with a date and sunset. On the radio, the on-air personality will say “John Doe. Sunrise XXX, Sunset XXX” during the reading of obituaries.
